How is Biogas Produced?

Biogas is produced in a digester through a four-stage anaerobic biochemical digestion process:

  1. Hydrolysis

This process transforms carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into methane (50-70%) and carbon dioxide (30-50%). Fermentation is complete once the substrate passes through all stages. Each stage is carried out by specific microbial populations, ensuring the efficient conversion of organic materials.

The key parameters of the process are temperature and hydraulic retention time (the time the substrate remains in the digester). Most agricultural methanization units operate at mesophilic temperatures (35-42°C), with retention times ranging from 20 to 70 days, depending on the type of raw material.

What Organic Materials Can Be Used?

Anaerobic digestion can convert nearly all types of organic materials into biogas, except for plant materials high in lignin or cellulose (such as wood). Organic waste (sewage sludge, livestock effluents, municipal and industrial waste), agricultural by-products, and energy crops are ideal feedstocks for this technology. Each type of feedstock offers varying energy yields, providing great flexibility in usage.
